As of October 1, 2011 the association will officially change the name. This news is so exciting that I'm saying why wait. So I'm jumping the gun and officially changing the name of the membership blog. The name "Scaffold & Access Industry Association" will expand what our founders started 39 years ago. The Scaffold Industry Association (SIA) members approved a name change for their association, effective October 1, 2011. The association will be called the Scaffold & Access Industry Association (SAIA)

Discussion about the name change took place during the SIA Executive Board meetings in June and the final decision was made at the SIA's general membership meeting on July 18th during the SIA Convention attendees.

SIA exhibited at Electric Power 2011

With the commercial industry still quiet and opportunities abound in the industrial industry, there was a decision to take SIA deeper into the Power industry and exhibit at Electric Power. The show this year was held at the Rosemont Convention Center in Chicago.

During the show I met a longtime member, Randall Industries. Bill Skoda has been involved with the SIA since 1996. It was a pleasure meeting you Bill and learning about the growth coming from Randall Industries. Bill is excited about the SIA again and plans on attending the upcoming convention in Minneapolis, MN. SIA was successful at the WOC

Where were the attendees this year at WOC. They moved the World of Masonry show to the North Hall and I think the attendees were confused. Central Hall, South Hall and NOW the North Hall. I think they need to leave it be for awhile. What do you think?

The buss word around the show was the "Scaffold Safety Experience" that the SIA and Safway Services held in the gold lot this year. There were over 100 companies that came and learned about the importance of scaffold safety. If you missed the experience go to the World of Concrete website and view the interview with Executive Director, Laurie Weber and Steve Smith, SIA President. Look for the SIA demonstrating at the 2012 WOC.

Well are you attending? World of Concrete (WOC) will be an interesting show this year compared to years past. As always this show is a success for the SIA. Our members exhibit and each year concrete & masonry contractors are always looking for scaffold information for their safety directors or field crews. That's why I love to exhibit at this show.

Remember Monday night is the opening of the "Scaffold Experience" in the Gold lot at the Las Vegas Convention Center. If you can't attend the opening event the Scaffold Experience will be opening during the entire week of WOC.

Before I start I wanted to re-cap PowerGen 2010. If you weren't there, you should have been. It's an industry that's about to explode. The new buz word is Nuclear! Everyone was talking about the opportunities in that industry. When and where is the question, but believe me it's exciting. Last week the SIA exhibited at the first of many regional tradeshows nationally. The California Construction Expo was held in Pasadena, California. The show was well attended by general contractors, sub-contractors and even Governor Arnold Schwarzeneger. I'm blogging this week from SIA headquarters in Philadelphia. Yesterday was the first day of the conference. The SIA set a record of first time attendees ever for the annual conference. The competent person suspended scaffold & frame and system scaffold trainings had record attendees.

NPRA Safety was helpful. Will we go next year?

Last week SIA had the opportunity to see if the Safety Conference was the right fit. The question still stands! Exhibiting at this show was a first and maybe the last. After speaking to many plant safety managers they have a trust in their scaffold contractors that everything is built safely. But, it was unanimous that hazard awareness training for the equipment is an issue on most plants. Should the SIA have a training established for the industrial industry? The question still stands.

We met Starcon who is very interested in the membership and SIA training. The wheels are in motion to start the process.

Congratulations to Michael Estes from Hunt Refining Company for winning the IPod. Mike came by and learned about the association and left the post card that was mailed out to all attendees at the conference.

How was INTEX?

After attending INTEX I made a decision not to return next year. Attendance was good, but compared to previous years you could see that commercial construction is quiet. I met with the new owner of Perry Scaffold. He explained since taking over and changing the name of the company is busier than he's ever seen in years past. Look for Nu-Wave Scaffolding Systems joining as well as getting involved with the SIA. I also met with Larry Ogle from Hi-Ground Scaffold. Larry has developed a new base plate for rolling towers that could change things up in that industry. The buss around the show floor was the new Disney project in Hawaii that should really help the economy in the islands.

ARA - The Rental Show

Immediately following the World of Concrete the SIA traveled to Orlando for the 2010 Rental Show. Recently the SIA joined an industry-wide initiative to create a first ever AWP equipment document on general training and familiarization. With this joint opportunity the decision was made to take SIA back to The Rental Show. Emily Bannwarth, Ansi Secretariat was in attendance and able to make a presentation at the press conference on behalf of the SIA.

The show did not result in new membership, however many companies came by the booth to learn more about the SIA for their business and the document.

World of Concrete 2010. What a surprise!

We all know that construction is down, equipment sales are minimal. new projects are still put on hold, it just sucks right now. But the World of Concrete show was a complete surprise. It was obvious that exhibitors were down but guess what, the show attendees were there. We met many companies didn't want to miss the show, or have an opportunity to hear the buss. With the help of the SIA team in attendance we managed to have the busiest booth in the south hall. It seemed like any SIA members that came to the show wanted to stop by the booth and visit. IWCA in Reno

SIA is exhibiting at the IWCA Expo in Reno. Along with exhibiting the association is hosting a suspended scaffold training with Harold Gidish as the instructor.

We would like to welcome back Columbia Building Services to the SIA. Michael LeSage felt it was time to re-join and get involved with the association. Mike was excited to know that regional chapter meetings were an opportunity as a user to participate on a local level.

The SIA office is still receiving renewal payments. But those companies that have yet to renew remind me that 2010 continues to drag many company's through the mud. I am seeing some light at the end of the tunnel.

But this isn't stopping the SIA from recruiting those companies that need safety & training for their business. The following are the shows SIA will be exhibiting for the first two quarters of 2010.

After some well deserved time off for the holiday's I'm back in the saddle again raging for the membership. Currently the SIA is at 83% for 2010 renewals. Is that good? Well, I would love to be at 100% but with an economy like we are experiencing that's likely. So I'll settle for 11% over the average for associations. But this week will bring more renewals, I can feel it.

How was PowerGen?

Let me start off by giving a big "Thank You" to President Bill Breault for taking time away from Breault Industrial to assist with the SIA booth. Your knowledge of the industry brought value to the booth.

The PowerGen show set record attendance this year. The SIA received three new member applications with one company interested in submitting an application as an ATI. Traffic at the SIA booth was greater than last year. Opportunities from this industry should continue to show results in membership. Many SIA members exhibited at PowerGen.

PowerGen + Economy = Economic Recovery

The history of SIA has found it's strength in the commercial industry since 1972. That's our backbone, however things are changing up a bit. It's no surprise that commercial construction has taken a hit with 2010 finding no relief. Every member I've spoken with confirms this to be true. Companies in that industry that have renewed under tough times, we thank you. There is no better time to stay involved with your association. Watch SIA in 2010 expand with new opportunities and value to your membership.

Where is the business you ask? Energy! As a nation our hunger for all facets of energy is growing. Those members that have experienced some growth in 2009 have an understanding that energy will lead us out this economic recession.

Your team at SIA headquarters is ready for this new opportunity starting with PowerGen. This international conference will host shows globally throughout 2010. We have updated the SIA booth to show an awareness to the power industry. The new booth will debut at PowerGen. Why do people take vacations?

This week I'm starting off with a good explanation of why I didn't blog last week. Well, I took a vacation. There you have it! Sometimes you just have to get away to clear your head and that's just what I did. But, I'm back in the saddle and my plans are to get these renewals done so I can get back to what I LOVE to do. Recruit for SIA.

SWRI welcomes SIA back to Fall Tech

After arriving back in my office is was apparent what an amazing opportunity SIA really had during the SWRI Fall Tech meeting held in Lake Tahoe this week. One right after another were restoration contractors interested in membership or updated safety information that only SIA offers. We sold numerous copies of the Suspended Scaffold DVD's and the CDRom of Basic Safety Guidelines for Supported Scaffold.

SIA sets out for Lake Tahoe!

Time for trade show recruiting again and the destination is Lake Tahoe for the SWRI Fall Technical meeting starting tomorrow October 17th. The last time SIA attended was in 2005 with a recently agreed alliance between SIA & SWRI. Keep in mind this is a match made in heaven. Members of SWRI all work off some form of access equipment. These restoration contractors are the cream of crop for the industry and safety programs are an essential element to their business. My game plan includes promote the newest SIA DVD's & CD's available for safety practices, getting a better awareness to the outstanding approved Accredited Training Institutes (ATI) for their much needed training, and of course MEMBERSHIP. They all need the information only SIA offers. I want 5 new members out of this group!

What's going to happen to the membership for 2010? Let's start of with the GOOD news. Membership renewals are up and way ahead of last year. How can I top that? I've put a goal of 100 new members by October 2010. Is that achievable. Absolutely. Even with the downturn of the economy last year we had 86 new members join the association.

Moving forward let's talk about new members. The newest member "The Safety Walker" brings an innovative product that could possible keep the trades safer on scaffold. October means a new year

Is it starting to feel like fall where you are? Not at SIA. October means renewals are in full swing and the SIA starts planning for the 2009-2010 fiscal year. The invoices went out one month earlier this year. Going forward all annual invoices will be mailed out in September, which is very different in years past. If you have not yet received your invoice contact me ASAP. Dont let the your membership lapse.

It's Monday morning and the end of September is near. Thank you to Tommy Hawkins from Associated Scaffolding Company in Durham, North Carolina for adding your 2 new branches as members of the association. Tommy read my blog and stepped up to the table to add those new locations. ThyssenKrupp Safway also added their new Motorized Division as a branch member. Exciting things happening at ThyssenKrupp Safway these days.

SIA shines on the "Today" show

Were you watching the Today show this morning? Today visited the new Dallas Cowboys stadium. They call it the "8th wonder" of the world. Now, if you were watching you would have seen Matt Lauer ride down from the gynormous HDTV screen in the middle of the field on a Tractel (Big Blue) suspended scaffold. That's right folks, SIA members are everywhere.

Okay, I'm sure your wondering how membership did this week. SIA recruited 4 new members. Atlas Sales Maui(branch for Atlas Sales), Reach Servicio y Equipos (branch member for Reach Service & Equipment), Scaffolding One, Fortress Industries Inc. Welcome new members to the SIA.

So, our new membership total is 875 which leaves me 25 left to recruit in the next two weeks. YIKES. I sure can use your help. I'm looking for names of contractor companies that can benefit from the outstanding safety information that SIA provides. September 11th. Where were you? Did you see the second plane hit on the Today show that morning. I did and will never forget the feeling. I was getting ready for work and just happened to look at the TV to get the shock of my life. I will never forget that brief moment. Let us never forget that moment.

The week ended defiantly on a good note for membership. We signed up 4 new members. Restoration Technology & Consulting, RedBuilt LLC, Scaffold Frame and Simian Risk Management. Welcome those new companies to the SIA. Get ready, joining the SIA will be the best business decision for your company.

4 new members. That pushes the membership to 871 with only 29 left to hit my goal of 900 by September 30th. Thanks John Warlikowski for the prospect list. I'm starting that this morning.

Getting Ready for 2010

It's that time of year again for membership renewals. All invoices will be going out in the mail next Tuesday September 8th. Most members should start receiving them by Friday September 11. Wow, September 11th is here again. I'm sure we all know where we were when the first plan hit. Let us never forget!!!

The SIA fiscal year will be ending on September 30th. My goal is to have the membership up to 900 members by then. Currently we are at 867 with our newest member Peri Formwork and Austin Industrial joining last week. I have a total of 5 excellent prospects in my pipeline that should close by next Friday. Stay tuned as count down starts today.

SIA beat the odds!

Were you there? Why not? You missed out on excellent speakers, presentations, updates on the OSHA/SIA alliance and imminent results from the councils. This is the time of the year when the industry comes together to discuss safety and training that is so needed in the construction industry. As an industry we are concerned!

Attendance was up, while many other associations in this economy are struggling to get companies to attend. The trade show was sold out. And, once again new prospects for membership were abound. Various companies entering the industry as well as old companies joined and rejoined during the conference. But, networking & collaborating was the buzz. Where is this economy going and how soon is it going to change.

We had 2 major speakers. Tony Salamme, Industrial Info, spoke about the industrial sector and which industry will lead us out of this mess. Tony was outstanding with his research & data that had people staying behind to hear more. Cliff Brewis from McGraw Construction/Dodge spoke about construction forecast that kept people in their seats. Both presentations were outstanding! Thank you Tony & Cliff for your inspiring information.

Where were the Plant Safety Managers?

Last week SIA exhibited at the NPRA Reliability & Maintenance Conference in Dallas, Texas. This show is new for SIA but not for the large scaffold builders. Those companies have found the abundance of opportunities for revenue growth within this industry. So our focus at this show was the plant safety managers. It's just that they were not there this year. The rumor on the floor was "WHERE ARE THEY". The exhibitors that I spoke to explained that this is very unusual for the reliability & maintenance show and not to judge a future decision of returning.

Actually, the show was a minor success for SIA. We received 2 new member applications and spoke to a former member who will be renewing. This same company is very interested in becoming an ATI in the Houston area. I call that a WIN WIN!

INTEX does it again!

Once again SIA exhibited and grew with membership from the INTEX show. INTEX just does it right. Right from the beginning I felt this could be a good fit for our industry. Why? It's the users baby. They're there and very willing to join, get training or buy new equipment. Guess what company is going to score a new customer? I spoke to a contractor and they had decided not to self perform their scaffold about 5 years ago. After relying on different scaffold builders they decided, "Let's get back in". They're looking for system scaffold to purchase. LOTS. Two of our advertisers in this months issue of "Scaffold Industry" will benefit this needed customer.

I spoke to many drywall, metal stud, plasterer and ceiling contractors how there business was and, was the economy effecting them. 85% had to say there business is going strong. Now I'm sure you don't believe me when I make a statement like that, but it's true.

SIA exhibitors at INTEX were EZ Scaffold, Falcon Ladder & Scaffold Mfg, United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Action Scaffold & Manufacturing, Granite Industries. All members reported that this was another good show for them.

SIA goes to GOSH

You might ask, "What is GOSH". It's Oregon's Governor's Occupational Safety & Health Conference. This regional conference had over 1300 attendee's and close to 100 exhibitors. Three SIA member companies were there exhibiting. The conference opened both days at 7:00 am with a free breakfast for attendees & exhibitors. WOW! You should have seen the people waiting to get into the hall both mornings. Also two SIA companies made safety presentations during the conference. Bruce McConnelee, Hydro-Mobile presented "Safe Use of Mast Climbers". Dave Glabe, DH Glabe & Associates presented"Working at Heights: How to Survive While on Scaffolding". Both were well attended with many attendee's stopping by the both requesting more information. I call that a win win for SIA.

SIA attends the AGC Convention

SIA is working incognito at the McGraw Hill booth at AGC. The stimulus work is the biggest concern at this years convention. Who's going after it and will they be shovel ready. I attended the general session. The mayor of San Diego spoke about the impact with the stimulus package and how it's effecting the local industry. It sounds like San Diego is fairing better than others. The military industry continues to land government dollars that has an amazing impact on the local market.

With the invite from McGraw Hill I attended the host party Wednesday night. Networking was in abundance. The most interesting person I spoke to was Jay Rojas, from Construction Resources in Guam. Guam is about to explode. I bet you didn't know that. They are looking for general contractors, sub-contractors, and you got it "SUPPLIERS". They need equipment. I introduced Jay to the SIA. He had never heard of the association but became very interested in the opportunities we could offer this new profound industry. I mentioned the annual convention and individuals he could talk to about training. Did you know that Guam was part of the United States? Tonight is the Willis/HRH party with lots of networking. SIA will be there!

IWCA vs SIA

Last week after Committee Week my travels took me to exhibit at the IWCA Expo in Atlanta. After missing the last years IWCA convention I had some concerns about taking SIA back. AND boy was I WRONG. One attendee after another approached the SIA booth with excitement we were there. I felt like a celebrity. No the real celebrity was Harold Gidish. Everybody knew Harold, had been a student in one of Harold's class, would like to take one of Harold's classes, or was taking Harold's class at this years IWCA convention. Having Harold in the booth was a win win for SIA both membership, renewing old members and possible getting a new ATI. Thank you for all your help Harold. WAY TO GO GIDISH!

Where were the attendees at WOC

World of Concrete. What else can I say about the show, but it was obvious attendance was down. Speaking with other exhibitors it was unanimous that attendees were the decision makers this year. Also, I found more Canadians than in years past. SIA renewed 2 previous Canadian members. "They're coming back John". The South American companies were in numbers. A new member in Brazil was very interested in becoming an ATI. That would give SIA 3 ATI's in South America. Special thanks to Bill Breault, Steve Smith & Laurie Weber for their assistance at the booth. Steve you are a wealth of information when it comes to international companies.
All in all, WOC was again a success for SIA

SIA attending World of Concrete

Heading out to the World of Concrete monday February 2nd. My concerns this year will be the attendance for the show. Also the SIA booth will be located in the South Hall with the World of Masonry show. How will they direct attendees to the south hall this year. Hands down, this is my number one show for the SIA.
